Annie “Marie” Lawhon Drake, 92, of Crawfordville passed away Monday, May 8, 2023. A lifetime resident of Wakulla county, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Woodville. For many years, Marie helped run her family’s store, W. E. Lawhon Grocery, in Newport, where she met many friends who frequented the store. In later years, Marie was a homemaker who enjoyed tending her yards, keeping up with friends on the phone, and watching the birds and fox squirrels who frequented her feeders and garden. She enjoyed taking care of her dogs, cat, and bird, Buster. Her yards were always a rainbow of color in the spring as she nurtured at least seven varieties of azaleas, wisteria, Spirea, and camellias.
Marie is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and close family friends. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years John C. Drake, her parents William Elliot Lawhon and Alice Langston Lawhon, her brothers James Lawhon and Emmett Lawhon, and her sister Jewell Lawhon Piere.
Her funeral service were held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Woodville Cemetery with Dr. Edward Smith Lyon officiating. In lieu of flowers for the family, contributions can be made to Big Bend Hospice 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308.
