Lila Fay Schmalfuss, 92, of Sopchoppy, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family. Ms. Fay was a native of Zion, Illinois, and she has lived in Sopchoppy for over 40 years. She was a member of the River of Life Church, and she also attended the Sopchoppy Southern Baptist Church. Ms. Fay loved her Bible and her God; she was a farm girl and once had a horse named “Ribbon.” She loved to sew and made matching clothes for her children. Ms. Fay was a great cook and loved to bake. She always liked playing board games especially scrabble, and would always enjoy a dessert, cake, cookies, ice cream or whatever was sweet. She enjoyed playing the piano and singing about her Lord, which was something she often did.

Survivors include her four children, Catherine Fay Talbott, Gary Robert Schmalfuss and wife, Debbie, Laurel Lee Travis and husband, Mike, Pamela Chafin and husband, Charles; one sister, Lorna Thorn; 11 grandchildren: Courtney, Justin, Ann, Elizabeth, Will, Kelsey, Destiny, Jennifer, John, David and Shayna, and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph Lester Crow and Catherine, sister Carolyn Dreyer-Switzer, and a brother Winson Crow.

A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday, March 5, starting at 11 a.m. at the West Sopchoppy Cemetery. The family will receive friends starting at 10 a.m.
