The Dunnellon football team put in a workmanlike road performance Friday, Oct. 7, with an 18-0 blanking of Belleview. The win came just three days after the Tigers opened district play with a 38-6 win over Hernando. That earlier game was postponed due to Hurricane Ian.

DHS improved to 4-2 on the season with its third-straight win. Belleview fell to 2-3. It was the first time this season the Rattlers, who were not playing on short rest, were held scoreless.

The Dunnellon defense tallied six sacks and seven tackles for losses in posting a goose egg. Junior John Derose III had three tackles for losses and a sack, while sophomore Eli Nelson added two sacks. Senior linebacker Gavyn Leinenbach totaled a team-high 10 tackles, giving him 64 for the year.

Sophomore Dylan Donahoe rushed for two touchdowns and junior Lacodrick Brown ran for a score to account for Dunnellon’s scoring. Freshman quarterback Dylan Curry was 13 for 18 passing.

The Tigers, who are 1-0 in District 2S-9, look to stay unbeaten in district play this Friday, Oct. 14, at Crystal River. The rivalry with the Pirates has been lopsided for two decades. The Pirates have won once in the series over the past 20 years – a 20-13 upset in 2018. Dunnellon bounced back with two dominant wins in 2019 and 2021. The teams didn’t meet in 2020 due to Covid-19.
