Oak Run Democratic Club (ORDC)

The ORDC’s April meeting was a great success. Rodney Long, Democratic candidate for the 9th District Senatorial seat, presented a spirited conversation on the present state of affairs in Florida, and how electing those like him could help forward more progressive ideals. He and Francine Edwards, President of the Marion County Democratic Women’s Club, reviewed redistricting plans and gerrymandering within the state. Because of redistricting, Mr. Long will now be the State Senate candidate for all of Marion County.

The May 19, 7 p.m. meeting at the Orchid Club will have guest speaker, Steve Swett. He is running for a Marion County School Board seat.

The ORDC, a Democratic Party Chartered Club, meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Oak Run Orchid Club.

There will also be a social luncheon get-together at the Oak Room on June 28 (call about specific time). This will be a great time to meet fellow Oak Run Democrats in a casual, agenda-free environment.

The Club’s membership continues to grow as more progressive individuals move into Oak Run. The Club has developed an action plan to reach out to all new Democrats moving to its neighborhoods.

Come join the ORDC’s activities to learn what we are doing to turn Oak Run and all of Florida “blue.” For more information, contact Gary Greene at 520-329-2322 or the club’s president Linda Chitwood at lindachitwood1@gmail.com.

Donut Drop-in 2nd Saturday of month

Come and join us at the Orchid Club for fresh hot coffee, OJ, and your choice of donut, bagel, muffin and assorted pastries. Any one of these for a mere $2 or two items for $3, every 2nd Saturday of the month at the Orchid Club Auditorium. New hours are 9 a.m. till 10:30 a.m.

Acoustic Jam Club of Oak Run

Because Oak Run’s Island Club has been temporarily closed for maintenance, the Acoustic Jam Club meets at the main ballroom of the Orchid Club. This gives the members the chance to spread out and enjoy the larger venue. The group meets 3-5 p.m. each Thursday.

We look for all musicians in Oak Run who wish to gather and play acoustic selections. If you play a guitar, uke, mandolin, banjo, bass, percussion or other instruments, you are welcome to join. Singing is not required but encouraged.

We require that members be able to play 2-5 chords, keep rhythm and play/sing along with others. Chorded copies of the songs for the day will be available at each session.

Our goal is to be able to perform as a group, have fun, and learn new songs. Therefore, for the first three Thursdays, we have a set group of songs to play. The last Thursday of the month is set aside for individual solo, or, if preferred, accompanied playing.

If this sounds interesting, we’d love to see you. For more info, contact Irv Becker at 816-809-7668 by voice and text, or email him at irv.becker@att.net.
