The Eagle Snag Trail, while not an official part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Great Florida Birding Trail system, is very much a part of the Citrus County system of birding trails and is one of the most popular. This trail inside the landfill provides the public an area from which they can safely observe these birds as well as many others that frequent there.

The Citrus County Landfill offers prime viewing of the symbol of America, as a number of nesting pairs of eagles make their homes in the Withlacoochee State Forest, which borders the landfill on three sides. The continuous influx of food by way of garbage is another attraction for the birds.

Hikers and bird watchers are required to check in and can pick up a map at the facility’s office, which is to the left as you enter the gate, before taking off on their quest.
