Strom

Kasey Strom of Crystal River competes in the bench press at the Citrus County Championships held Dec. 16 at Lecanto High School. On Wednesday at the District 1A-11 Meet at Weeki Wachee High School, Strom finished second in the traditional lifts and third in the snatch at 169 pounds, to advance to next week’s regional meet.

It was a successful Wednesday afternoon for the Crystal River girls weightlifting team at the District 1A-11 Meet held at Weeki Wachee High School.

Eleven members of the squad placed in the top six at their respective weight classes to advance to the Region 1A-3 Meet at The Villages on Friday, Jan. 28.

“I was very excited for these ladies. Each one of them lifted their personal best in one or more lifts,” Crystal River head coach Michelle Dickemann said. “This is a young team with only one senior. They work hard and really support each other.”

A trio of Pirates claimed district titles.

Genesis Gonzalez won the district crown at 169 pounds in the snatch – a new event this season that is separate from the traditional bench press and clean and jerk lifts.

Bailey Wells also won the snatch district title at 183 pounds and finished fourth overall in the traditional lifts, to qualify for regionals in both.

Emily Fultz did the same at 199, winning the district snatch title and placing fourth in the traditional lifts.

Other regional qualifiers for the Pirates are Aubrey Maier, fourth in traditional lifts at 110; Alana Wengart, fourth in the snatch at 129; Aryanna Bressler, fifth in the snatch and traditional lifts at 154; Amaya Friends, sixth in the snatch at 154; Kasey Strom at 169, second in the traditional lifts and third in the snatch; Alissa Millen, second in snatch and third in traditional lifts at 199; Emily Ivory, third in the snatch and fourth in traditional lifts in the unlimited class; and Leah Smith, fifth in the snatch and sixth in traditional lifts at unlimited.

“This is the first year for the snatch and we had three district champions and 10 of our ladies qualified for regionals in this event,” Dickemann said. “I really hope a few of them can make it to state.”

Lifters from Citrus and Lecanto will compete in the District 2A-8 Meet on Friday at Leesburg High School beginning at 12:30 p.m.
