Lecanto freshman Nicole Shanks swims the breaststroke during the District 3A-5 meet on Oct. 28 at North Shore Aquatic Complex in St. Petersburg.

Nicole Shanks got in one last meet for her freshman season, and managed to make it a full day at the Sailfish Splash Waterpark and Aquatics Center.

The lone Citrus County representative in the Class 3A FHSAA Swimming and Diving State Championships on Saturday in Stuart, the Lecanto High swimmer advanced to the consolation final in the 500-yard freestyle.

Shanks came in second in the final race, with a time of 5:16.09, to place 10th overall.

“I think I did OK,” Shanks said. “It was really fun. There were definitely a lot of swimmers, they were all very fast and it was fun to watch.

“I thought I’d do a little better than I did and make the final, which was really fun. … I’m hoping next year to do better and I’ll have more of an idea of how it is.”

Shanks finished ninth in prelims, one spot short of reaching the championship final and assuring herself of a medal. She had a time of 5:16.70.

“Very promising as a freshman with all the nerves going into her first state meet. She was very nervous this morning and that settled down. I’m very happy for her,” Lecanto coach Michelle Dickemann said.

“… She had a mishap with her goggles (snapping) before finals, which might have affected her a little bit. The best thing about it is she’s gotten through the first-year jitters. Every year she’ll know what to expect, she’ll be comfortable in that arena, and she should do better and better each year.”
