Lecanto junior Catalina Veldwijlk, the reigning Chronicle Female Cross Country Runner of the Year, outsprints Lake Minneola's Ava Hendrix to the finish line Saturday at the Whispering Pines Invitational. Veldwijlk finished second with a time of 20:02.17 to pace the Panthers to a sixth-place finish in the nine-team field.Â
Seven Rivers' Zach Saint (155) was the Warriors top finisher Saturday at the Whispering Pines Invitational. The junior finished in 60th-place with a time of 21:36.13.
Crystal River junior Aida Canetti (219) and Citrus' Aubrey Mueller (294) pace themselves during the early portion of the Whispering Pines Invitational on Saturday at Whispering Pines Park. Canetti was the Pirates’ lone representative, finishing 47th with a time of 27:27.16. Mueller finished 63rd with a time of 31:07.59.

INVERNESS — Under overcast skies and humid temperatures, Citrus County cross country runners kick started their 2022 prep season at the Whispering Pines Invitational at Whispering Pines Park.
Beset by rain most of the week, runners made their way through the grueling 3.1-mile course inside the interior trails at Whispering Pines Park, where the Citrus High School boys unit, seeking another trip to the state meet, finished second to Ocala Forest, which won the overall team title, 57-62, with the Hurricanes nipping at their heels.
Freshman Miles Tobin paced Citrus with a sixth-place finish, completing the course in 18:06.24, with Logan Shaw not far behind in eighth-place with a time of 18:46.70. Luke Martone (12th, 19:04.27), Caden Luyett (16th, 19:22.71) and Henry Trochez (20th, 19:42.54) rounded out the top five team finishers for the ’Canes. Lecanto finished 12th overall in the team standings, paced by junior Zachary Curreri’s 19th-place finish. He recorded a time of 19:40.41 for the Panthers.

Crystal River and Seven Rivers both competed, but did not field full teams in the season-opening meet. The Pirates had three runners compete, with freshman Evan Huebner finishing a team-best 71st with a time of 22:42.57. The Warriors had two runners in the field and were lead by junior Zach Saint’s 60th-place finish in a time of 21:36.13.
On the girls side, Lecanto junior Catalina Veldwijlk, the reigning Chronicle Female Cross Country Runner of the Year, finished second overall with a time of 20:02.17 to pace the Panthers to a sixth-place finish in the nine-team field. Citrus finished ninth, led by Katie Gagne’s 36th-place finish with a time of 25:44.61. Oak Hall won the team title with 31 points, easily outpacing second-place Lake Minneola, which had 63 points.
