Learn to play tennis with some local pros

Chronicle tennis columnist Eric van den Hoogen.

And here it is — the time to gear up for the new local tennis league season. The USTA fall league has already started the last two weekends with several Combo 50+ teams from Citrus County. The start for the local leagues is scheduled for the first part of October at which time most snowbirds should be back in town.

Some of the snowbirds, though, haven’t seen a racquet all summer long. If you were lucky enough to have a tennis facility close by up north like we did ourselves in the Netherlands, you will be one step ahead of the others. It definitely was interesting playing on an outdoor carpet court filled with sand. Hardly a bounce, strange to run on, too, but fun to play with the temperatures in the Netherlands being in the 70s except for one week when it passed 100 degrees. It doesn’t feel like four months ago that I wrote the last article for the 2018-19 season but I’m ready for the 2019-20 season and hope that you are, too. See you on the court.

Nature Coast 3.0 Ladies League

The league is for players 55 years and over with a rating of up to 3.0. Every match will consist of two sets, in case of a tie the match will be decided by a 10-point Coman tie-break. Each set won means a point for the team. There is a universal sub list which means that players on this list can sub for any given team. If you are interested in playing or subbing in this league, please contact the new chairperson for the 2019/2020 season Nancy Bruins at rp41me@gmail.com or call 352-628-4370.

The season will start on Oct. 7. All new players are encouraged to sign up over the summer and new teams are also invited.

Citrus Area Senior Ladies 3.0-3.5 Tuesday League

Just a reminder that you need only four players to form a team for this league. With all the ladies we have playing tennis in Citrus County, it should be possible to add a couple of teams to this league.

To play in this league, a player must be at least 50 years of age or better, with a 3.0 to 3.5 rating. The league is always looking for players to sub for teams. If you are interested in subbing, please contact chairperson Marian Wood at marianwood19@gmail.com.

Thursday Morning Citrus Area Doubles League

Players must be at least 25 years old and have a 3.0-4.0 rating to play in this league.

The Tennis Bratz take over the chair for the 2019-20 season with Lisa Dickinson as chairperson and Nancy Hotchkiss as the scorekeeper. For information about the league you can contact Lisa at 352-346-7175 or dickinson127@gmail.com.
