The Citrus girls cross country team qualified for states for the fourth straight year on Saturday, finishing fourth overall with a 158 team score in the Region 2A-2 meet at the Oaks Equestrian Center in Lake City.
Mackenzie Scordato paced the Hurricanes with a third-place run of 19:31.8. Taylor Koon was 24th in 21:21.9, Carleigh Steel was 35th in 21:51.1, Kendall Gibson came in 49th with a time of 22:17.1 and Kaley Kjos ended up 53rd with a 22:21.7.
The top eight teams and top 15 runners advanced to the state meet next Saturday at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.
"We’re super excited. The girls had a great performance," Citrus girls coach Roselle Lattin said. "Mackenze placing third is exceptional considering she was ranked eighth coming in. That’s her personal record. She had a great finish.
"We’re ecstatic with the results and the way the girls performed. It’s a difficult course, but the weather definitely helped."
The Crystal River girls were 20th (556), with Jordan Martynowski posting the Pirates’ fastest time with a 99th-place 24:37.1.
In the boys race, Citrus was 12th (358), led by Thomas Tyler (40th, 17:50.7), and Crystal River placed 18th (466), with Cody Thompson finishing 19th (17:08.8).
Lecanto’s boys ran in the 3A-1 race at the same venue and combined for a 14th-place 392, however Chase Wilson qualified for states by crossing the finish line in 12th place with a time of 16:56.6.
