I am responding to a letter in the April 19 paper from one of the regular Trump haters. First, I want to say that hate is such a nonproductive trait. It really helps nothing at all, but I know I can’t change a hater, so I won’t try. But I do feel compelled to at least clear up some of the false statements in the aforementioned writer’s letter for the other Chronicle readers. He said Trump should have sent a team of scientists to China in December. How would that be possible since according to the WHO website, www.who.int/emergencies, it was first reported to WHO on Dec. 31, 2019. It was first declared a public health emergency on Jan 30, 2020. Trump did close down travel from China in late January, but was criticized by the media and Democrats as being racist.
The letter also stated Trump fired Homeland Security Advisor Tom Bossart and did not replace him. That is false. Rear Adm. Peter Brown was in the position for six months. On Feb. 20, 2020, Julia Nesher was put in the position. And finally, as to the National Security Council (NSC) senior director position, this taken from www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-Trump-fired-pandemic-team. “It is true that the Trump administration has seen fit to shrink the NSC staff. But the bloat that occurred under the previous administration clearly needed a correction. … One such move at the NSC was to create the counterproliferation and biodefense directorate, which was the result of consolidating three directorates into one, given the obvious overlap between arms control and nonproliferation, weapons of mass destruction terrorism, and global health and biodefense. It is this reorganization that critics have misconstrued or intentionally misrepresented. If anything, the combined directorate was stronger because related expertise could be commingled.”
You want to blame President Trump for everything, and that is more of a reflection of who you are than who he is. He is at least trying.
