The governor of Florida has refused to look at the COVID epidemic in medical terms, but rather political, so he can appeal to his Trump-based base. He is betting his political future, but more importantly the lives of Floridians on one word, “rights.”

He says he backs parents’ rights to choose to vaccinate and follow CDC guidelines. He is actually right. Parents have the right to not get the shots to protect themselves and their children. Parents have the right to not have/let their children get vaccinated. Parents have the right to tell their children not to be protected by wearing masks. Parents have the right to let their children possibly catch the virus. Parents have the right to let their children possibly be hospitalized. Parents have the right to possibly have their children be put on a ventilator. Parents have the right to let their children possibly die from the virus.

Having the right does not mean it is right. Isn’t that right, governor?
