I love finding Carl Hiaasen in the paper again Sunday. He is a terrific writer and has published a number of fascinating novels. I wish that he would run for office; great ideas and a sharp mind.

So sick of Gmen trying to sabotage every single conversation and hold everyone hostage. He always turns every conversation into guns, guns and more guns. All we're talking about here is the celebration of an accomplished Florida writer. That's it.

CitrusCo Citizen

I agree with you totally. One of the finest Florida writers. I often used his YA novels in my ELA classes so that students could experience accomplished writing. Their favorite was "Hoot", in which burrowing owls faced extinction because of development in Florida.

Hiaasen is indeed an excellent and persuasive writer but that does not make him correct. Joseph Goebbles was also quite persuasive. Hiaasen's views are those of someone who ardently believes all guns are evil and even looking at a picture of one stirs the soul to violence - unless of course you are in the employ of a Democrat politician, then that seems to immunize one against their charms. Remember that 10 years ago one of the first things the socialist Chavez government in Venezuela did was ban the possession of firearms by civilians. Maduro stays in power today because of that law. Don't let the socialists here and their 'useful idiots' (like Hiaasen) put the US in the same boat.

One should be careful when describing one's self. I think there's something about glass houses and bricks? And BTW, gun ownership by the citizens of Venezuela would not change the situation there, nor would it make a difference here in this scenario. Armed civilians vs trained military personnel with weapons of war. Get serious.

GMEN

Yeah, that's why we won Viet Nam and the Afgan war in just a couple weeks.

Miuke Nelson

No clue. We didn't fight civilians on their own.

GMEN

MK- do you think there aren't any civilians out there with military experience?

Miuke Nelson

So are you planning an insurrection? In Vietnam, civilians fought alongside regular military in a coordinated way. If more and bigger guns were the answer then we would indeed have won in two weeks. In both cases you had civilians fighting alongside military to repel and invader. Do you really foresee a time when you'd view your own government as an invader and would take up arms against it?

GMEN

MK - Good Grief Man, the Afghan war has been going on for 18 years: there is no organized regular army opposing the US forces - they are ALL civilians, some with military experience, but not part of any regular army. They are a classic guerrilla force in the tradition of Mao. Similarly, the Viet Cong fought the French and then the South Vietnamese army to a standstill - then the Americans attempted a 'rescue' and failed. The viet Cong and the Afghans had (have) the support of a large portion of the civilian populace. Similarly the IRA fought the British until they had to sue for peace. All these populations had firearms and used them to take more from government troops in contrast to,say the Chinese, whose only choices are obedience or death. Could the US defeatan insurrection? of course - if they were willing to carpet-bomb Dallas and Atlanta for example or maybe you are in agreement with Democratic U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (D-Ca) who suggested launching nuclear weapons against gun-owners who refused to hand over or sell semi-automatic rifles to the U.S. government? Who wouldn't resist a government like that?

Miuke Nelson

"Democratic U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell (D-Ca) who suggested launching nuclear weapons against gun-owners who refused to hand over or sell semi-automatic rifles to the U.S. government? Who wouldn't resist a government like that?" Let me get this straight. So you do support insurrection against our government and your trigger is the uses nuclear weapons against our own populace? How about RPGs.

GMEN

MK "what about RPGs?' I'm not sure; do you have a trigger? or is there nothing the government could do that would cause you to defend the Constitution ?

Miuke Nelson

Trumpism at its finest, deflect and change the conversation. It is not about defending the Constitution. It is about insurrection and your willingness to go there. The question I posed was about you, not me. Do you really think Swallwel was talking literally, or is it just a convenient conflation from the right wing? Would you take up arms against your own government if they legally banned assault weapons? That's the question. Maybe my sarcasm obscured it.

Gmen, the only person in the world that would combine Hiaasen and Goebbles in the same sentence. There just seems to be something wrong with that. Try this combo, Gmen, Trump and Hitler. Both were quite persuasive liars.
