The Florida Department of Transportation is working on a new tunnel (or underpass) that will connect the north end of the Withlacoochee State Trail in Citrus Springs to the south end of the Dunnellon Trail off County Road 39.

The 1-mile project will allow pedestrians and bicyclists to continue safely their uninterrupted route on the multi-use trail via the underpass.

The Withlacoochee State Trail extends 46 miles from Citrus Springs to Dade City. It is a multi-use trail that spans Citrus, Hernando, and Pasco counties. The Dunnellon Trail is not as lengthy, running only about 2.5 miles and runs across the Withlacoochee River into Marion County.

FDOT had considered installing an overpass or signalized crossing but went with the underpass because it was less expensive and supported by trail users.

Construction on the $5.6 million project is expected to finish by summer 2022.
