Two men from Polk and Orange counties were killed and a man from Seminole County was seriously injured Wednesday afternoon after their van entered the path of an oncoming truck on State Road 44 outside of Inverness.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report, the crash occurred at around 3:40 p.m. when the 2008 Ford van going south on East Gospel Island Road traveled in front of a 2015 Dodge truck going westbound on S.R. 44.
When the truck broadsided the van’s drivers side, the collision caused one of the van’s two passengers, 58-year-old John Thomas Capucille to be ejected. Capucille reportedly was not wearing a seatbelt.
Emergency responders transported Capucille, of Casselberry, to Ocala Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, FHP’s report states.
Dennis Giannelli, the van’s 63-year-old driver from Davenport, and passenger Otis Lyons, 58, of Orlando, died at the scene, according to FHP.
The truck's driver, Daniel Paul Barbuck, 70, of Grant, Alabama, suffered minor injuries but wasn’t transported to a hospital.
No charges are pending, and FHP reports that alcohol was not a factor in the collision.
