A two-car crash on U.S. 19 Friday morning left a Homosassa man dead and hundreds of motorists stranded in traffic.
At 7:54 a.m., 57-year-old Mark W. Taylor, of Homosassa, was driving a white 2013 Ford van in the left-turn lane of West Cardinal Street at the intersection with U.S. 19, according to a Florida Highway Patrol crash report.
David S. Lambert II, 29, of Homosassa, and his passenger Richard N. Drawdy of Citrus Springs, also 29, were traveling north on U.S 19 in a red 2004 Dodge pickup truck approaching the intersection when Taylor failed to stop at the red light and drove into the path of Lambert’s truck, which collided with Taylor’s van.
Taylor, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lambert and Drawdy were not injured in the crash.
After crews closed the intersection, northbound traffic appeared to be backed up as far south as the US 19 junction with U.S. 98, a distance of approximately 3 miles.
Roads were cleared at about 11:15 a.m., according to FHP.
