A Columbia County man died Tuesday morning after he walked onto an Alachua County roadway and was struck by a semitrailer driven by a Homosassa man.

For reasons still being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), 70-year-old Joseph Mitchell, of Fort White, entered northbound lanes of US 441, north of the intersection with Northwest 202nd Street, at around 10:30 a.m. according to an FHP report.

In doing so, the left side of a northbound Ken semitrailer driven by 22-year-old Parker Le Meur collided with Mitchell, who died at the scene. Le Meur was uninjured.

FHP reports that alcohol was not a factor.
