An accident the afternoon of Thursday, May 13, at a school-bus stop in Hernando killed an 8-year-old girl and left two other occupants of this Chrysler Sebring injured. None of the 30 Citrus High School students aboard the bus were injured in the crash on State Road 200 near the intersection with East VFW Lane. Citrus County Sheriff's Office deputies closed S.R. 200 from U.S. 41 to East VFW Lane. Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.

An 8-year-old Hernando girl died after the vehicle she was in rear-ended a Citrus County School District bus dropping off students in Hernando.

None of the 30 Citrus High School students aboard the bus or their driver were injured in the 3:09 p.m. collision Thursday, May 13, according to Florida Highway Patrol and the school district.

According to highway patrol, which didn't identify the motorists involved, the bus, driven by a 79-year-old Inverness man, was eastbound on State Road 200 and had stopped to unload students near the intersection with East VFW Lane.

At the same time, a 75-year-old Hernando man was driving a Chrysler Sebring east on S.R. 200, failed to brake for the bus and struck its rear.

Nature Coast EMS workers transport someone who was injured in this Thursday afternoon, May 13, crash in Hernando involving a Citrus County School District bus. An 8-year-old girl died in the collision, and two others were injured. None of the 30 Citrus High School students riding the bus reported injuries.

According to highway patrol, the Sebring's driver and a 10-year-old girl passenger from Hernando suffered minor injuries.

A younger girl in the Chrysler who wasn't in a child restraint died after being taken to hospital, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
