A late-night fire destroyed a Floral City home, killed a dog and injured a firefighter.

Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR) crews responded at around 10:10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, to an address off of East Rabbit Lane, where firefighters arrived to find a single-story, wood-frame house 50% involved with flames, according to CCFR.

CCFR firefighters from stations in Floral City, the Inverness Highlands, Pine Ridge, Kensington and Connell Heights brought the blaze under control by 10:34 p.m.

Occupants were able to evacuate ahead of firefighters’ arrival, according to CCFR, but a dog died in the fire. Firefighters buried the canine on the property. A CCFR firefighter also suffered from minor injuries.

CCFR ruled the home a total loss, with damages estimated at $45,000. It’s unknown where or how the fire ignited, according to the agency.
