Since June 2020, the Esther Chapter of the Daughters of the King at Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church in Lecanto has sponsored a monthly drive-thru food donation collection, with generous support from the congregation and the community.

All food donations benefit SOS food pantry, which feeds thousands of families in Citrus County.

The monthly drive-thru food donation collection is the third Tuesday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon at Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church, 2540 W. Norvell Bryant Highway (County Road 486), Lecanto.

Food donation drop-off is at the portico entrance at the church.

The food collected on Tuesdays is taken to SOS on Wednesday in time for distribution on Thursday.

Also, coolers will be on hand to store refrigerated or even frozen items.

“We continue to get excellent response from our community and Shepherd of the Hills Church,” said Cathy Allen, Esther Chapter president.

She added that the SOS food bank continues to remain very busy on Thursdays at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and thanks to people bringing food to their monthly drive-thru collections, they average between 1,000 and 1,200 pounds of food delivered each month to SOS.

The SOS food pantry is from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursdays at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 439 E. Norvell  Bryant Highway, Hernando. Clients are allowed to receive food at this drive-thru pantry every other week.
