A Citrus County Sheriff’s deputy on his way to work late Monday afternoon sideswiped a utility pole to avoid colliding with a vehicle in his lane, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputy Nick Erdman, who has been with the sheriff’s office for less than a year, was on Gospel Island Road around 4:30 p.m. about a half-mile from State Road 44 when he saw a vehicle in his lane coming toward him, sheriff’s spokeswoman Brittney Carmen said.

To avoid a collision, Erdman veered off the road and sideswiped a power pole. The other vehicle, a blue Nissan Murano, kept going and didn’t stop, Carmen said.

Erdman was transported by ambulance to the hospital with minor injuries, she said.

“Thank goodness our deputy is fine,” Carmen said.

No other vehicles were involved. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.
