A Crystal River man died Wednesday night after his SUV traveled into the waters of the Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in Alachua County.

Kenneth Gotay, 54, was driving a 2000 Jeep Cherokee south on U.S. 441 at around 9:30 p.m. when the Jeep left the roadway to the southwest, struck a fence, continued into swamp waters and became submerged a half mile north of the intersection with Southwest 104th Avenue, according to a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) crash report and FHP spokesman Lt. Patrick Riordan.

Gotay died at the scene.

Members of the Alachua County Sheriff’s dive team, Alachua County Fire Rescue, Alachua County EMS and Elite Towing recovered Gotay’s body and the vehicle, FHP’s report shows.

Alcohol test results are pending.
