County commissioners meet 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 13 at the county courthouse in Inverness.

Eighteen affordable housing apartment units are coming to Crystal River, courtesy of the Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg.

Citrus County commissioners this week gave approval for the affordable housing project adjacent to the Daystar Life Center on State Road 44 near County Road 486.

The Daystar thrift store and other buildings will remain onsite.

Attorney Clark Stillwell, representing the Diocese of St. Petersburg, told commissioners on Tuesday that the 18-unit multifamily complex provides needed affordable housing for the community.

“Who better than the Catholic Church to oversee this?” he said. “They have a track record and you should trust it.”

Plans call for two 5,400-square-foot apartment buildings that will have access from both S.R. 44 and C.R. 486.

The staff report noted that residents of the complex will have access to nearby shopping, as the Crystal Springs Shopping Center is across the street on S.R. 44.
