Supervisor of Elections Susan Gill on Tuesday took the unusual step of issuing an endorsement for her replacement.
Gill, who was elected in 1996 and is retiring after the 2020 election, said she is supporting her longtime employee Maureen “Mo” Baird.
Baird, who has worked in the office since 1985, is the operations manager. She said she has overseen at least 79 elections in Citrus County.
Baird is set to retire from the office on July 1.
“Absolutely I endorse her,” Gill said. “Look at what she’s done here.”
Gill said she will excuse herself from the canvassing board, which certifies election results.
She said Baird will continue in her role for the presidential preference primary on March 17, but will have no role in the Aug. 25 Republican and Democrat primaries, or the Nov. 3 election.
Gill’s endorsement came the same day former Commissioner Scott Adams announced his intention to run for supervisor of election. Both Baird and Adams are Republicans; with an open seat, the race may attract other candidates as well.
