About Sheriff Mike Prendergast

Sheriff Prendergast is a 31-year Army Military Police combat veteran. He enlisted as an E-1 Private and retired over three decades later an O-6 Full Colonel having served as Provost Marshal, a military police position similar to sheriff, on four assignments. During his time on active duty, Prendergast continued his education earning three bachelor’s and three master’s degrees.

He was appointed Executive Director of the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs upon retirement from the Army and became the longest active serving director in Department history. He led 1,100 employees and a budget in excess of $125 million. Since swearing in as Citrus County Sheriff in 2017, Prendergast and his team have accomplished many agency milestones including the largest drug bust in county history. He and his wife Naomi live in Pine Ridge and have two grown children.
