Local submariner, Dennis Maita Sr., was inducted to the prestigious Holland Club of the United States Submarine Veterans Inc. (USSVI) on April 3.
The Holland Club is an exclusive group within the USSVI, where the core requirement for eligibility is the designation “Qualified in Submarines" for a minimum of 50 years.
Maita joined the U.S. Navy in 1970 and volunteered for submarine duty. In 1971 after completing boot camp and submarine school, Maita was assigned to the USS Entemedor, SS-340, where he qualified and was awarded the Submarine Warfare Insignia, the coveted “dolphins”.
Maita served on four other submarines during his eight years of Navy service: USS Corporal, SS-346; USS Casimir Pulaski, SSBN-633; USS Stonewall Jackson, SSBN-634; and USS Gato, SSN-615.
Maita joins 16 other members of Sturgeon Base that have achieved the same honor and distinction.
Qualified submariners who would like to join Sturgeon Base should contact Commander Robert A. Arnold, MMCM (SS), retired U.S. Navy, at email@example.com.
