Many of us struggle with aging, or will in the future. Simone de Beauvoir suggests “There is only one solution if old age is not to be an absurd parody of our former life, and that is to go on pursuing ends that give our existence a meaning.”

Many aging musician demonstrate that principle. Tony Bennet, 93, Loretta Lynn, 87, and Willie Nelson, 86, all continue to pursue the music that has defined their lives.

Locally, octogenarian Bill Rea, 87, is pursuing his music career at the recently opened Elegant Pelican in Crystal River. The Bill Rea Trio will perform there this Saturday from 7:30-10:30 p.m.

Rea started playing piano and keyboard in the ’70s. He moved to Fort Lauderdale from Toledo and began playing piano bars up and down the Intercoastal Waterway. Twenty years ago, he moved to Crystal River and continued his career here, playing at the Plantation Inn.

Now, the residents of Cedar Creek Assisted Living are entertained by Rea every Thursday. It was there that he met Bobby Jabo, who is now his bassist. Dave Morgan, drummer, completes the trio.

The trio “plays a little of everything,” including rock, waltzes, rumbas, two-step and four-step. The ballroom at the Elegant Pelican is an excellent venue for those wanting to dance to his very danceable music.

Rea likes to engage his audience.

“I like to get out and walk around the room and sing to the people at their tables. They enjoy that.”

Bassist Jabo “is an old rocker” and adds some classic rock to the song mix.

Rea claims that “I probably know every song from 1941 on up ... I’ve been around.”
