Jose and Sonia Figueroa are the Knights of Columbus Council 6168 October Family of the Month.

"The council once again looked beyond its membership to cite a couple for their work in the community," Grand Knight Mike Belkin said.

“Sonia and Jose are a dedicated couple committed to fostering the Faith in fellow Christians,” explained Olga Heineman, chair of the Hispanic ministry at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Beverly Hills. “They were handed the baton by others and ran with it. It is a pleasure to watch them work and support each other in their respective ministries.”

Both Sonia and Jose are readers during Spanish Masses at Our Lady of Grace Church. Sonia also is an altar server and Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.

Together, they help ensure that the sanctuary and altar are properly set up before Masses and that Liturgical instruments are returned to their places after Masses. Getting ready for Mass includes translating announcements and Prayers of the Faithful into Spanish.

The Citrus Springs couple came to Florida from Humacao, Puerto Rico, in 2005 for “a better quality of life and better future for all family members,” Jose said.

She is from Las Piedras and he, from Rio Piedras.

“We moved to this place and did not know anyone here,” Jose said, “but we are successful because we put Jesus in front of everything.”

Sonia worked for 27 years at Banco Popular in Puerto Rico in a computer room operations center.

Jose inspects new bridge work for the Florida Department of Transportation District 5. He is currently the senior bridge inspector for the 22 bridges that connect Expressways 429 and 417 with Interstate 4 in the Orlando area.

Both are college graduates with degrees in business administration. Jose’s focus was cost accounting and Sonia’s, management.

What drives their commitment to the church and their community?

“We want to be a good example in general to all people in need,” Jose said. “We try to be compassionate, especially to those in need, and share what we have.”

The Figueroas celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in June. They have two daughters, Yahaira Ivette and Yarelis Ivette.
