The Knights of Columbus Council 6168 August Family of the Month is one of the hardest working teams in Council 6168, Odie and Kim Malave of Beverly Hills.
“They can be counted on to be at every activity and social gathering,” Council 6168 Grand Knight John Uva said. “They are helpful beyond measure.”
They currently staff Our Lady of Grace Church/Knights of Columbus blood drives while the usual project manager is away. In the past, they were regulars in the kitchen for bingo at least once a month.
Raised in New York and the New Jersey areas, Odie and Kim met in 1976 and became the best of friends. They started dating in 1979 and were married in June 1980. They moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1988. He became chief engineer of Dynalco, a division of Crane Industries, where he worked for 17 years. They moved to Citrus County in 2010.
They are currently active in hospitality industries, delivering food to the less fortunate and are also volunteer members of the Citrus County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Odie is a scuba diver certified to 130 feet. Both are ham radio operators (he, KK4HFX and she, KK4PBF).
Odie became a Knight on May 1, 2010, and now is the council warden. Kim became a Catholic during the Easter Vigil liturgy five years ago and is the secretary in the Ladies Auxiliary. They attend mass at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and are hospitality ministers at 10:30 a.m. Sunday masses.
The Malaves have three grown daughters and raised another three through high school. They came to Citrus County in 2010 from Fort Lauderdale.
Council 6168 of the Knights of Columbus meets in Lecanto on the first Tuesday every month. The council, the full name of which is Abbot Francis Sadlier Council 6168, is part of the 1.8 million-member international Knights of Columbus. The Knights are Roman Catholics who value charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism. Catholic men who want to join the Knights may contact Grand Knight John Uva at 352-270-8612.
