‘Surviving the Holidays’ workshops coming up

Friends of Citrus and the Nature Coast is offering “Surviving the Holidays” workshops/memorial for anyone who has experienced a loss and would like to discover new reasons to enjoy the holidays again.

These workshops are provided as a public service and available to all at no charge.

  • The first workshop in Homosassa Springs will be held from 4:30-6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the Friends of Citrus and the Nature Coast Wings Grief Center, 8471 W. Periwinkle Lane (gold building on right) in Homosassa Springs.
  • An additional session will be from 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, also at the Wings Grief Center.

Since all workshops observe CDC guidelines for safety and gatherings, and space may therefore be limited, reserve your seat in advance for any date by calling 352-249-1470.

Free ABC of Dementia workshop on tap

The Homosassa Public Library, 4100 S. Grandmarch Ave., will host an ABC of Dementia workshop from 10 a.m. to noon Nov. 18, 2020.

The workshop, conducted by Debbie Selsavage, president of Coping with Dementia LLC, will define Alzheimer’s and dementia, explain how dementia affects individuals, discuss ways to interpret dementia behaviors for better communication and results, and show how compassion and the proper use of voice, approach, and appropriate touch can result in more effective and less-stressful caregiving.

Quit tobacco your way with a little help, tools

Tobacco Free Florida offers free tools and services to help you get started, with Quit Your Way. During the COVID-19 pandemic, quitting tobacco is more important than ever for your health and peace of mind. Get the support you need from the comfort of your own home.

Participants will receive nicotine replacement patches, gum or lozenges, if medically appropriate; must be 18 or older.

They will also receive a workbook and materials, which more than doubles your chances of success.

Gulfcoast North Area Health Education Center and Florida Health continues its free virtual Tools to Quit classes in November: Wednesday, Nov. 18 — 1-3 p.m.; Wednesday, Nov. 18 — 6-8 p.m. in Spanish; Friday, Nov. 20 — 1-3 p.m.; Monday, Nov. 23 — 10 a.m. to noon; Monday, Nov. 23 — 6-8 p.m.; Tuesday, Nov. 24 — 10 a.m. to noon; Wednesday, Nov. 25 — 10 a.m. to noon; Monday, Nov. 30 — 6-8 p.m.

Tools to Quit will provide you with information about the effects of tobacco use, the benefits of quitting and will assist you in developing your personal quit plan. Cessation groups cover all forms of tobacco.

Want to lose weight? TOPS 401 meets in Hernando

Tops FL401 is currently meeting at a new time: 8:30 a.m., at First Baptist Church, 3790 Parson’s Point Road, Hernando, for weigh-ins and a very short program starting while weigh-ins are in progress. We use COVID-19 precautions: masks are required, and no more than two members per table. The meeting room is cleaned and sanitized prior to our meetings.

TOPS FL387, Lecanto is currently meeting every Monday at Central Community Center, 28014 W. Marc Knighton Court, Lecanto. We offer support and help to anyone who needs to participate in any weight control program.

Weigh-in begins at 2:30 p.m. with a short meeting following. COVID-19 precautions are practiced: Masks are required and social distancing is in place.
