Writing the “Good Times” column for the Chronicle is a great hobby.

Visiting local restaurants and bars, listening to the music and talking to the performers strikes most as a pretty fun gig. There is a downside, however. Those visits yield not just columns, but also pounds.

It’s hard to go to a local pub and not order a drink and snack and, if the band is good, perhaps two or three. This week I am looking for musical inspiration for losing weight. The Arthur Godfrey’s 1940’s tune “I don’t want her, you can have her. She’s too fat for me,” is not the answer.

In my search, I have found that while some songs denigrate obesity, others celebrate it. “Fat Bottomed Girls” is a personal tribute to an overweight nanny who apparently inspired Queen guitarist Brian May in his youth. “Brick House,” by the Commodores is another celebratory tune: “Ow, she’s a brick house. Yeah, she’s the one, the only one, built like an amazon.”

Perhaps the best fat song, one balanced in its evaluation of excess pounds, is “Fat” by Weird Al Yankovic. To the tune of “Bad” by Michael Jackson, Yankovic sings “If I have one more pie a la mode, I’m gonna need my own ZIP code.”

The answer, of course, is not listening to inspirational weight loss songs: it is getting up and dancing. Join me on the dance floor this week in an effort to have fun and lose weight.
