BOCC proclaims red ribbon week, unity day

The Board of County Commissioners: Chairman Ron Kitchen, First Vice-Chairman Jeff Kinnard, Second Vice-Chairman Brian Coleman, Scott Carnahan and Jimmie T. Smith, with representatives from the local anti-drug coalition.

The Citrus County Board of County Commissioners presented a proclamation at their meeting Oct. 9, proclaiming the week of Oct. 22 through 26, 2018 as Red Ribbon Week, the month of October 2018 as Bullying Prevention Month, and Oct. 24, 2018 as Unity Day.

Substance abuse and bullying is particularly damaging to one of our most valuable resources, our children, and a contributing factor in the three leading causes of death for teenagers: accidents, homicides and suicides. It is the goal of Red Ribbon Week, National Bullying Prevention Month, and Unity Day to involve families, schools, businesses, churches, law enforcement agencies and service organizations in all aspects of this campaign and establish an atmosphere that supports awareness, education and ongoing initiatives to prevent and reduce illegal drug use and violence among youth.

The Board of County Commissioners recognizes the week of Oct. 22 through 26, 2018 as Red Ribbon Week, the month of October 2018 as Bullying Prevention Month, and Oct. 24, 2018 as Unity Day and calls the observance to the attention of all citizens.
