The second annual Citrus Pride! will be held Saturday, June 29, from noon to 4 p.m., at the Crystal River Mall. The family friendly event will celebrate the LGBT community and its allies. The celebration will feature live music by Cat Valentine, as well as special visits from local female impersonators/drag performers Ginger Kaye Belmont and Mama’Savannah Georgia. There will be vendors, door prizes, raffles and a children’s section with games and face painting. Everyone is welcome. The event is sponsored by the Democratic Equality Caucus of Citrus County. This year’s celebration will mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement. In the early hours of June 28, 1969, New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village. The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement.
Americans have shifted their attitudes during the 50 years since the 1969 Stonewall Riots. A recent landmark national survey by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) of over 40,000 Americans, including results for all 50 states finds approximately 69% of Americans support nondiscrimination protections for LGBT people today.
