Lecanto infielder Nathan Hines, left, is pulled off second base by a throw from the outfield, as Crystal River’s Casey Purnell sprints to the bag in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday in Dunnellon. Lecanto won the 5A-6 District Tournament semifinal contest 6-2 to advance to Friday’s final.
Lecanto pulls away late to send CR home

DUNNELLON — In stark contrast to Lecanto’s regular-season loss to Crystal River, which found the Panthers bringing home two of its 15 base runners, the LHS baseball club used its opportunities to the fullest in Wednesday’s district tournament opener at Mike Payne Field in Dunnellon. The No. 3 seed Panthers converted nine base runners — and just five hits — into six runs to best the second-seeded Pirates 6-2, and advance to Friday’s 5A-6 district championship game to face No. 1 Citrus.
