County set to swap parcels

After buying an old motel two weeks ago to aid a drainage project in Homosassa, the county plans to exchange land parcels with Progress Energy Florida for better access.

At Tuesday’s meeting of the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC), a public hearing will be conducted to authorize the land-swap agreement.

When bad grammar happens to good people

When I first came to work at the Chronicle, I shared a pod with a grammar stickler.

I would say something like, “People that eat bugs for lunch are odd.” And he would spin his chair around and say, “People who. People who. People are ‘who;’ objects are ‘that.’”

I’ve never forgotten that. People who eat bugs are odd. Bugs that eat people — well, you get the point.

Backpack blessings changes name

Children still will be blessed with food-filled take-home backpacks — that will not change.

However, as of June 1, the program formerly known as Blessings in a Backpack changes its name to Citrus County Blessings.

New building, planning fees unveiled

Some fees will change; some remain the same.

Vince Cautero, director of the Planning and Development Department, presented a review Thursday of updated building and planning fees before the Citrus County Planning and Development Commission. The fees defray the cost of services, thereby lowering the expense placed on taxpayers.

LECANTO — Puzzle piece by puzzle piece, 18-year-old Amanda Gearhart worked methodically on a recent afternoon to illustrate a deeply personal story on a ceiling tile.

Fore lack of rain: Hernando homeowner makes golf course from dry canal bed

HERNANDO — J. R. Chasser doesn’t have to worry about a water hazard on his new golf course.   “Right now the only trouble is, I’ve got armadillos digging up my fairway,” he said.

Chasser recently converted the dried-out canal off his boat dock — formerly the “water” in his “waterfront” property — into a golf course, complete with putting green, fairway and tall grass hazard.

Deutschman in anti-testing rebellion

INVERNESS — Pat Deutschman gets so angry she could spit.

Deutschman, the 14-year veteran member of the Citrus County School Board, works herself into a frenzy when she discusses Florida’s standardized testing system.

Deutschman believes rigorous testing impacts students — she calls them kids, regardless of age — so negatively that the impact is sometimes felt immediately and in other cases may not be known for years.

“I’ve been arguing about this for a long time,” she said. “This is nothing new.”

Early morning raid

CRYSTAL RIVER — At dawn’s early light, Citrus County Sheriff’s Office personnel made a dramatic visit to a suspected drug house and grabbed three people.

Tiffini Tamme, 32, her boyfriend, Jerry McKay, 30, and her mother, Teresa Tamme, 56, also known as Ms. T, of 2279 N. Reynolds Ave., were roused from bed and arrested at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. 

Banking on community

HOMOSASSA — What began as nearly 5 acres of untouched land off Cardinal Street has transformed into a facility that will help feed the hungry of Citrus County.

A number of people turned out Saturday to attend the open house at the new Community Food Bank of Citrus County and We Care Food Pantry warehouses.
