The debate over reclassification of the manatee from endangered to threatened status is heating up. The Florida Democratic congressional delegation has weighed in on the issue, saying members strongly disagree with downlisting the sea cow’s status. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced July 2 it would conduct a five-year status review.

Members of Florida’s Democratic congressional delegation have joined the chorus of parties asking the federal government not to reclassify the West Indian manatee.

On July 10, U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Tampa/St. Petersburg, wrote a letter signed by nine other Democrat members of the state delegation of Congress which urged federal authorities not to downlist the manatee.
