Stephen Scheve ad Katie Robbins, visiting from upstate New York, walk back from the Fort Island Gulf Beach boat ramp
Nov. 29 after getting an up-close look at the now-closed ramp. The ramp remains closed due to damage the dock sustained in Hurricane Hermine, which on Sept. 2 brought the worst coastal flooding the community has seen since the 1993 “no-name” storm. County officials are working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, to meet criteria to rebuild the dock, which they estimate will cost $31,600. In the meantime, the county is applying for state and federal permits for the work. There is no timetable for when the dock will be replaced and the boat ramp open, officials said.
