Women celebrate centennial

On the eve of America’s entry into World War I, a group of 43 women established the Inverness Woman’s Club.

It was April 5, 1917.

They met at the Orange Hotel, which later became the Crown Hotel, now Crown Court.

According to Hampton Dunn’s book “Back Home,” as World War I raged overseas, the women of Inverness wanted to do their part by rolling bandages and knitting sweaters, lap covers and scarves for servicemen.
