Predominantly female volunteers help build Habitat house

By Special to the Chronicle

INVERNESS  —  “Women’s Work” took on a new meaning April 30 when more than 80 predominantly female volunteers spent their Saturday installing siding and painting sheds at two Habitat homes in Inverness. The side-by-side houses will belong to two single moms and their  children this June.

Teams of volunteers came from Lowe’s, Progress Energy, Walmart, Crystal River High School, Regions Bank, Capital City Bank, Latter Day Saints Church, and Xi Nu Upsilon Sorority. Many individuals  and groups of friends also volunteered after reading about the Women Build project in last Friday’s Citrus County Chronicle.
The Citrus Habitat for Humanity Women Build Day was funded by a $5,000 grant from Lowe’s Corporation. It is one of 275 similar women-led builds nationwide in the week leading up to Mother’s Day to encourage women to become active participants in eliminating poverty housing in America.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit ecumenical Christian housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty housing. Habitat volunteers build simple, decent houses in partnership with low-income families. For information on becoming a volunteer or a partner family, call the Habitat office at (352) 563-2744.
