Mary Brown, 87

Mary Carty Brown, 87, Hernando, died Wednesday, May 14, 2008.

MaryCannon, 87

Cary, N.C.

Mary Della White Cannon, 87, formerly of Sugarmill Woods, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2008, in Cary, North Carolina.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Morse (Mike) Kalt of Cary. She was preceded in death in 1993 by her husband, George Thomas Cannon.

Mary was born June 7, 1920, in Hope, Arkansas.

After graduating from high school, she received a B.A. in education from Arkansas State Teachers’ College.

She married George Cannon on December 1, 1950, in a ceremony at her family’s home in Hope. Mary and George lived in Hope, where Brenda was born, until 1958. Later they lived in various towns in Louisiana, Arkansas and Florida.

During this time Mary taught high school and eventually earned her M.A. in Library Education from the University of South Florida.

She was the librarian at Crystal River High School for 18 years. The staff of the school yearbook dedicated the 1986 volume to her.

After retirement the Cannons lived in the Sugarmill Woods community. Mary moved to Cary in 2006 to be near her daughter.

Mary was an avid reader, gardener, and bridge player, and in her later years she traveled extensively with her daughter and son-in-law.

Friends remembered her sense of humor and her willingness to help others. She will be dearly missed by the friends she made wherever she lived.

A memorial service was held at Heartfields Assisted Living in Cary, and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hope.

Thomas Franklin, 61

Beverly Hills

Thomas C. Franklin of Beverly Hills, Fl., died on Friday, May 9, 2008, at Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness, FL, Born in Buffalo, New York, he had made Beverly Hills his home since 1981, moving from Tampa, FL.

Survivors:

Former wife: Carolyn M. Yant, Citrus Springs, FL.

Brother: Wilson C. Franklin, Lutz, FL.

Uncle: R.B. Franklin, MD, of CA.

He was preceded in death by sister Mary Franklin.

He served in the Florida National Guard 1965-1973 Staff Sergeant with Honorable Discharge.

His working career included:

Worked for the Tampa Tribune and Tampa Times (1965-1973); Argus Africa Group of Newspapers in South Africa (1973-1976); Tampa Times (1976-1981). Worked as reporter, copy, editor, assistant editor, page one, columnist.

He worked for Beverly Hills Development Corporation 1981-1986, first as Vice President, then as an Executive Vice President. Owner and Publisher of the Beverly Hills Visitor, Owner and President of QPI productions. Started Sandpiper Realty and was also a broker from1998-2001. General Manager of WYKE TV from 2001-2005. General Manager of radio stations, WRNZ AM 720 and WRGO FM 102.7 2006 to present.

Public Service Includes:

1983-86 Vice Chairman’s Citizens Coordinating Committee for Comprehensive Plan.

1985 Chairman, Citrus County of 100.

1997-2003, Member of the Board of Trustees, Old Courthouse Museum.

1998 to present I teach class on Citrus County history at CFCC.

2002, Vice President, Citrus County Economic Development Council.

2002-05, Member, Board of Directors, Citrus County Education Foundation.

2003-06 Chairman, Citrus County Historical Advisors.

Notable Awards:

1985 Citrus County Chronicle Citizen of the year.

2002 Citrus County Economic Development Council.

“Small Business of the Year” (as GM of WYKE).

2008 running candidate for Citrus County Commission.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the CFCC Foundation scholarship program in name of Thomas C. Franklin. A memorial service will be held at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at the Old Citrus County Courthouse grounds.

Edith Holman, 80, New Port Richey, died Friday, May 16, 2008.

Hans Luntta, 88

Beverly Hills

Hans Kullervu Luntta, 88, died peacefully in his sleep on May15, 2008, attended by Anna, his loving wife of 55 years.

Hans, of Beverly Hills, Florida and East Hartford, Connecticut, served with valor in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor of December 7, 1941. He was stationed on Pearl Harbor with his brothers Elmer, Pete, and John.

Hans Served in the Navy with distinction for the remainder of the war, and thereafter joined the U.S. Merchant Marine Service, which brought him around the world several times. He retired as pressroom foreman of the Hartford Courant of Connecticut. In retirement, he traveled, to his great joy, with Anna to such countries as Italy, Mexico, Fiji and Finland, and often attended Finnish festival and gatherings throughout North America.

In addition to his wife Anna he is survived by sons Mark and his family od Andover, CT; Karl and family of Glenmont, NY; Hans, Jr. of Miami, FL; grandchildren Kaario, Jack, Nikki, Dan and Allisa; sisters Viola Vienot of Canton, CT., “Dot” Jenkins of Niantic, CT; and many nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM on Monday, May 19, 2008, at Fero Funeral Home with Crematory. Visitation will be held 1 hr. prior to services. Burial will be at Fero Memorial Gardens, Beverly Hills, FL.

Donations in his honor may be made to the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.
