Spring is right around the corner and grills are being wiped off, and the familiar aroma of barbecue will soon overtake the community.
The New Church Without Walls could not linger any longer, though, for a taste of what many call “heaven.”
The inaugural Hernando Crossroads BBQ Cookoff, sponsored by the New Church Without Walls, will begin at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, in the field next to Brannen Bank in Hernando.
The public is welcome to come eat. The location is near the intersection of U.S. 41 and Parsons Point Road, across from the eastern terminus of County Road 486.
“It is going to be great food, and we want the public to come out and get some barbecue,” said co-coordinator Kelly Beckett.
Beckett said many of the members of the church participated in the barbecue cook-off in Floral City and really enjoyed it. They decided to do a similar cook-off and make it a fundraiser for the church and the homeless.
“If anyone wants to participate, they are welcome,” Beckett said. “They don’t have to be a professional barbecuer; they can be a backyard barbecuer. Anyone is welcome to participate.”
An entry fee of $50 is required for anyone who wants to compete. Judging begins at 2 p.m. First- and second-place prizes will be awarded for ribs, chicken, homemade sauces and pulled pork. However, prizes will only be given to contestants who follow the rules.
“We have several rules,” Beckett said. “One rule is the food has to be cooked out there. Also, the barbecue must be cooked either over wood or charcoal. No gas is allowed.”
Contestants must register by March 20. For information, call Kelly Beckett at 352-220-1863.
