Citrus County sheriff’s officials apprehended a man described as an armed career criminal Saturday who is wanted in Massachusetts on charges of — among other things — opening fire in a densely packed neighborhood.
Police in Barnstable County, Mass., said William Arthur Hayes Jr., 31, fled before he could be arrested.
Wednesday, the CCSO charged him with being a fugitive from justice, possession of marijuana and resisting an officer without violence.
Hayes reportedly ran a red light and was stopped Saturday afternoon, but when the deputy ran his license and did a warrant check, they found he was a fugitive from justice. The deputy reportedly called for backup, but as soon as the second vehicle came, Hayes reportedly took off running. A K-9 was deployed and Hayes was arrested soon after. Before attempting to flee, he allegedly threw a bag containing marijuana on the ground.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office Career Criminal Unit worked closely with members of Barnstable Police Department’s counterpart unit in Hyannis, plus the state attorney’s office, to get fugitive charges on Hayes on an active Barnstable County warrant, according to Gail Tierney, CCSO spokeswoman.
Once Hayes faces his local charges, it’s expected he’ll be extradited to Massachusetts, Tierney said.
Hayes faces charges of armed assault with a firearm with intent to murder, illegal possession of a firearm, discharging a firearm and possession of cocaine and heroin.

Why do we jump for joy when an arrest is made?
The empire building with the thrist for power and control, waistful spending of tax dollars and the extremly poor leadership is what disgusts most residents not the road deputies. Save the political hype you are not fooling anyone jumping for joy every time you see an arrest made.
"If only I had stopped at that red light......"..
Even the cream of another state's criminal element looks great in CCDC orange. Bravo CCSO. Bravo. If ol Bill was a better driver he would still be free. Oh well............
Cudos to the CCSO
Yes the detractors such as Brealistic will have something negative to say about this good work also, but he's a criminal himself so no surprise.
In Your Face
Okay, Brealistic and others of the kind, eat your words. You are always so quick to fabricate nonsense about CCSO being isolated from other agencies and not smart enough to catch out-of-town criminals. Heads up, boys, CCSO may not get every hit-and-run criminal before they flee the scene, but this case clearly shows how uninformed you have been in making unfounded and downright silly accusations.
If you can't do anything more than make up silly stories and quote the same old tired rhetoric, don't bother posting a reply. Or take a lesson; since I have been quick to point out a flaw or two when CCSO really makes a blunder, why don't you man-up and give a few hoorahs for taking some out-of-town trash off our streets.
See ya back here after 5PM

I applaud the deputy for making a safe arrest
I am more than glad to say that I am happy to see this fugitive behind bars instead of driving around Citrus County or passing through here. This happens everyday all across the nation in law enforcement, you stop a vehicle and run the occupants and sometimes get a hit, so please stop making this look like some rocket science it is police101. I am glad the officer in this case is safe because he did not know whom he was dealing with, that is the main thing.
