Jane's Garden 4/16/17: A look at the world's tallest palm

-A A +A

In central Florida, several species of native palms will grow without much care after establishment. These include Florida’s state tree, the Sabal Palmetto, zones 8-11, which is also the state tree of South Carolina. Species also include Needle Palm, Rhapidophyllum hystrix, zones 8-10; Saw Palmetto, Serenoa repens, zone 8-11, both the green one and the bluish silver-leaved variety; Scrub palm, Sabal etonia, zones 9-11; and Bluestem Palmetto, Sabal minor, zones 7-10. All four are four native palms that never reach treelike size.
