Special to the Chronicle
Although there are more widows, on average, than widowers, the latter have their trials equal to that of widows. The Census Bureau reported in 2004 that 3 percent of men were widowers as compared to
12 percent of women. After age 65, the percentages rise significantly: 14 percent for widowers and 45 percent for widows. Still, the numbers don’t tell the story of the special adjustments men must make to the loss of their spouse or partner.
