THE ISSUE: Sheriff’s office’s Intelligence-Led Policing program.
OUR OPINION: Worthwhile program.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office’s Intelligence-Led Policing (ILP) program is a proactive approach to law enforcement.
The program uses intelligence gathering, technology and teamwork to ferret out known criminal elements in the community and use that information to begin surveillance ahead of the commission of a crime. The information can also be used to develop a list of suspects once a crime has been committed.
ILP is hitting its stride; the county reduced major crimes by 9 percent in the past year. Sheriff Jeff Dawsy cites this state-of-the-art program as a primary reason for the decrease.
Using this aggressive tool improves the sheriff office’s ability to prevent and deter crime rather than simply react to it.
Citrus County has many benefits for its citizens: good schools, a lush and diverse environment and a low crime rate, which all enhance the quality of life we enjoy.

"Drop a dime" on the bad guys!
From the beginning of time, good policework has depended upon someone within the criminal culture to "drop a dime" into the phone. Someone on the inside or with knowledge or suspicion calls the police or the FBI or the Sheriff's Office to notify them to be alert, because someone is going to do a bad thing or someone has done a bad thing which violates their social responsibilities.
Suspicious activity, after dark at your neighbor's home, activities of groups of people are most notable. Teenagers congregating are not necessarily illegal, but let's be real, we got in more trouble before our judgment was mature, nothing changes when it comes to a mature mind. Gunshots heard are not "firecrackers", report them.
Plenty of money but no job, report them. Fighting and cussing, report them. Strange smells, report them. Undercover operations can also provide officers an opportunity to drop a dime on the bad guys. But the best source is the citizens of the community.
Good guys and girls reporting bad guys and girls is a good thing.
