History Bike Gainesville VII: From Inglis to the Gulf

04/29/2017 - 9:00am - 12:00pm

Saturday, the 29th, the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) is hosting its seventh History Bike Gainesville Tour. These tours occur every few months and each one focuses on a different theme concerning Gainesville’s or Florida’s past.History Bike Gainesville is a guided bicycle tour in and around Gainesville. We stop at selected historic and prehistoric sites for interp and discussion! Come bike through Florida history and prehistory with History Bike Gainesville!

For the April 29th ride, From Inglis to the Gulf – Cross Florida Barge Canal, History Bike Gainesville will venture out of Gainesville to Crystal River where, reflecting on Earth Day 2017, we will focus our ride on one of the most controversial undertakings by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Florida history, The Cross-Florida Barge Canal. While our attention on the tour will be the portion of canal dug north of the city of Inglis to the Gulf of Mexico, we will discuss the broader ranging issues regarding the construction of what would have been the largest and longest canal in the world. Renamed the Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway, the canal is now considered one of the greatest achievements by environmental protectors in state history.

Guest speaker on this ride will be biologist Jamie Letendre of Florida Coastal Office.

The ride will start and end at the parking lot of the Withlacoochee Bay Trail, off US 19/98, .5 mile south of Inglis, Florida. The route is a 10 mile - round trip, ride along a paved trail adjacent to the canal. We will head west from the parking lot to the trail terminus at the Gulf of Mexico, stopping at overlooks to discuss the history and ecology of the area along canal. You can find the location here.

Tour is scheduled for 3 hours. RIDE STARTS PROMPTLY AT 9, CHECK-IN STARTS AT 8:30AM. Please RSVP on the Facebook event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1396944017035766/  if you are planning to attend!
