Our next members meeting will be on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 5:30 p.m. at the Lakes Region Library, 1511 Druid Road, Inverness.  As always, everyone is welcome!  Fred and Ann Abeles will present a short talk and photo show about their recent bicycle touring in the Czech Republic and Germany.  They spent 10 days cycling along the southern border of the republic from Mikulov to the renaissance city of Cesky Krumlov.

Ann and Fred are “snow birds” and have been coming to our area for 16 years and they ride the Withlacoochee State Trail all of the time.  This is another presentation you do not want to miss!  They have honored us many times with information on their various cycling adventures and each time we have had a packed house.

Our Wednesday work crew has been a little short of help this month.  Several members and their wives took some well-deserved time off and went on a cruise and had a great time.  The volunteers remaining behind have been removing the gate posts at the street crossing, as they had rotted over the past 10 years.  These are the ones that were supposed to be good forever.  Lately, we have a problem with most any kind of wood that has been in the ground for a long period of time.

The rain and gusty, windy weather that we had a few weeks ago knocked down a tree in the Holder area and one at the south end of the trail.  Enough volunteers were rounded up to clear the trail and clean up the affected areas — thanks to all who helped!

In February, we should have everyone back as well as rested up and ready to hit the Trail again.

VISIT “rttwst.org”:

Visiting our website will allow you to see pictures and comments about the trail.  We have a new updated website, which provides a multitude of information and provides complete information on previous annual bike rides.  You can also see our merchandise section which showcases all that we have to offer, especially our new Withlacoochee State Trail jerseys!  All pictures are in color so that you can really see what each one looks like.  You can order, pay online and have it mailed to you all on the computer.   If you have any questions, you can contact Al at acairns@tampabay.rr.com or call him at 352-419-4274.

Over the years, we have had a problem with ATVs on the northern part of the trail between the Citrus County Utilities sewer plant easement road and Dearborn Drive.  ATV’s are not allowed on the trail and they make it dangerous for everyone on the trail.  The motorized vehicles make a mess on the trail and cause problems for trail users.  If you see an ATV or motorcycle, call the Florida Wildlife Commission at 888-404-3922 or the non-emergency number for the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office at 352-726-1121.  You can also report the matter to the Trail Office at 1-352-726-0315.  Further, you can report rocks and stones that have been thrown up on the trail by the ATV’s or motorcycles.  Your calls are important and it allows the proper authorities to stay alert about where and when these violators are in the area. Law officers are looking for them on a continuous basis.

Now that the weather is perfect, use the trail as much as you can.  Thank you for all of your comments and I can be reached at 352-527-3263.
