Autism seminar on tap March 12

Margie Garlin, a parent of a child with autism and a Center for Autism and Related Disorders (CARD) representative in Citrus County, will speak about autism spectrum disorder at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the Chet Cole Life Enrichment Center (CCLEC), at the Key Training Center, 5521 Buster Whitton Way, Lecanto.

Garlin will cover a variety of issues that include ASD as a diagnosis, helping your child as a student, ASD in combination with other disabilities, programs and interventions that will help an individual with ASD and how CARD, specifically, may help. 

CARD is the go-to organization for those with a child with autism, Asperger’s or other communication disorder, or if parents suspect that might be the case.

Jessie’s Place benefit Sunday 

A buffet of Citrus County restaurants will join forces Sunday night to present Cooking for a Cause, to benefit Jessie’s Place.

From 6 to 9 p.m. 16 area restaurants will serve up their special offerings and will face off in “Top Chef” style competition.

Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the event and may be purchased by calling Jessie’s Place at 352-270-8814. 

Tickets are also available at the Crystal River Mall and BS Publications.

Jessie’s Place functions as a central location to coordinate all needed services for children who have been abused or neglected. 


League will mark first anniversary

Everyone is invited to the League of Women Voters of Citrus County’s first anniversary luncheon starting at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, in lieu of its general meeting, at the Citrus Hills Country Club in the Garden Room.

Deirdre McNab, president of the League of Women Voters of Florida, will be the guest speaker. There will be a drawing and a money tree available.

Tickets are $20 in advance; reservation required.

NAMI meeting slated Monday

Doors open at 6:15 p.m. Monday, March 10, for the general meeting of the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on County Road 486 in Citrus Hills. 

Speakers will begin at 6:45 p.m. All those with an interest in mental health issues are invited, and especially those who may have a relative or friend who would benefit from LightHouse membership. 

To educate the public about this avenue for mental wellness, the facilitator for the LightHouse, Gloria Tucci, will present a program at the meeting, along with some of the LightHouse members who will be telling their stories and how LightHouse membership has helped them achieve success in their lives. 

Refreshments will be served. ­
