When I was 17 in 1943, I enlisted in the Army Air Force Reserves to be called up for flight training when I became 18.
I was able to get a spring semester at Penn State in 1944, so I enjoyed a taste of higher education. It was announced that there would be a dance at the gymnasium that would feature the Les Brown orchestra, the “band of renown.” I went “stag” since I did not know any girls at that time. Needless to say, the gym was packed and the music was delightful.
