CRYSTAL RIVER — Belk, the oldest tenant at Crystal River Mall, is closing.
The employees were informed Friday, as neighboring mall department store JC Penney was wrapping up its going-out-of-business sale. That store was scheduled to close this weekend.
“We are closing the store,” confirmed Belk spokeswoman Jessica Graham. “This difficult decision was made only after a careful evaluation of our business plans and competitive position in the Crystal River market.
“We have been unable to achieve our financial goals at this location as a result of local market and economic conditions, and we believe that closing the store is in the best long-term interests of the company and our stockholders. We informed our associates of the decision today.”
She said they expect the store to close in early to mid-January.
